On January 14 2025 the Opportunity Fund received a loan application from the Bainbridge Island Land Trust. On January 22 the Fund advised the Trust that their application had been approved.
A New Community Forest in the Making on Whidbey Island
The Whidbey Camano Land Trust has ambitions to conserve at least 1,000 acres of contiguous forest on South Whidbey Island – The Holmes Harbor Community Forest.
This 29.9 acre purchase will permanently protect an important estuarine wetland, tidal salt marsh, freshwater emergent wetland, oyster beds and upland habitat in Oakland Bay.
In December 2024 Washington Opportunity Fund loaned the Great Peninsula Conservancy $500,000 to help complete the purchase of 452 acres of productive working forest land.
After a successful community fundraising campaign, Skagit Land Trust repaid the loan in December, 2023.
This property is 1,060 acres of land with two miles of shoreline along the Little Spokane River.
